Revolutionizing Waste Management: The Modern Milkman's Innovative Approach
In a groundbreaking move, the Modern Milkman, a UK-based dairy delivery service, is set to transform the way we handle unwanted electronics and toys. With its latest expansion, the company is not just delivering milk and groceries but also addressing a significant environmental issue. Founded by entrepreneur Simon Mellin in 2019, The Modern Milkman has already made a name for itself by delivering groceries to over 100,000 households across the UK. Now, it's taking a bold step further.
The company will collect broken or unwanted toys, mobile phones, and laptops during its regular deliveries, partnering with recycling specialist EMR Group. This initiative aims to tackle the growing issue of electronic waste, with British households having an average of 30 broken tech items, according to Material Focus. By paying £2.50 for a collection bag, consumers can conveniently dispose of these items, ensuring they are repurposed or recycled.
Mellin, who grew up on a farm and started his business with no qualifications, understands the challenges of waste management. He says, "We did a lot of research, and there isn't a convenient way to deal with this stuff." The service has already been trialed in four regions and is now expanding across the UK. The company's focus is on sustainable growth, making itself more valuable to customers by addressing waste management.
The Modern Milkman's unique approach is not limited to the UK. After acquiring local businesses in the US, it is also expanding there, with sales growing rapidly. The company's sales rose by 13% to £52 million in 2024, driven by its US expansion, despite making a pre-tax loss. This expansion is part of a broader trend in the grocery delivery industry, which has faced competition and market slowdowns post-pandemic.
As big supermarket chains like Tesco and Sainsbury's expand their delivery services, smaller players like Getir have faced challenges. The Modern Milkman's innovative waste management service is a response to these changes, offering a convenient solution for consumers and a sustainable approach to business growth.
