MAGA's Divide: Rubio's Comments on Israel and Iran War (2026)

Rubio's War Remarks Unveil MAGA's Internal Strife Over Israel

The 'America First' faction within MAGA erupted after Secretary of State Marco Rubio effectively blamed Israel for drawing the U.S. into war with Iran. This sparked a heated debate, as Rubio's remarks were the first time a Trump official had so explicitly acknowledged Israel as a driving force behind the war, especially at a time when public support for Israel in the U.S. has hit historic lows.

On Capitol Hill, Rubio stated, 'We knew that there was going to be an Israeli action against Iran, which would precipitate an attack against American forces. And we knew that if we didn't preemptively go after them, we would suffer higher casualties.' This statement ignited a controversy, as it seemed to suggest that the U.S. was being forced into war by Israel.

However, U.S. officials later clarified that Trump ordered the strikes because Iran was negotiating a nuclear deal in bad faith, and the U.S. needed to destroy Iran's offensive military infrastructure. Rubio's remarks were interpreted as making the U.S. appear subordinate to Israel's interests, inflaming MAGA elites who were already angry about Trump's decision to go to war.

Some Trump allies, like Matt Walsh, criticized Rubio's statement, arguing that it implied the U.S. was in a war with Iran because Israel forced their hand. Others, like Philip Klein, defended Rubio, stating that he wasn't arguing that Israel dragged the U.S. into the war.

The reality, however, is more complex. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been urging Trump to strike Iran since December, and it's unlikely that Israel would have acted without Trump's approval. Trump has also reined in Netanyahu from aggressive military operations and forced him to accept a Gaza peace plan.

Despite the controversy, a majority of Republicans still support Trump's decision, while a small minority opposes it. Some MAGA supporters, like Laura Loomer and Mark Levin, praised Trump's move, while others, like Mike Cernovich and Nick Fuentes, expressed doubts and concerns about the war's legitimacy and its potential consequences for American citizens.
